A couple of weeks ago I attended a conference called ‘Thinking Bigger About Your Business.’ I attended as a participant and also as a speaker – I presented on the subject of the importance of creating the environment that supports and helps you achieve what you want for your business. Although the conference focused on business success, many of the things we talked about apply in all aspects of life.
The very first thing that was discussed was the fact that success begins within. It’s important first of all to be clear about what it is that you want, and last week we discussed ways that you can use your environment to help you become clear. But it’s also important to be aware of what is going on inside you. So you may have certain goals and dreams but have difficulty achieving them because of something called negative conditioning.
Negative conditioning is what you feel and believe at a core level about what is possible for you. It is based on your life experiences. This conditioning can be so strong that even if you identify your negative beliefs and change them – for example, if you believe that you are unlovable and therefore incapable of maintaining a loving, healthy relationship, or if you believe that you do not deserve to be wealthy . You may become aware that you have these beliefs and work to change them so that you really do start to love yourself and feel that you are worthy of love or that you do deserve to be wealthy, but the conditioning can be so strong that it still keeps you stuck.
Bob Proctor explains this in his ‘Success Puzzle’ program. He refers to this negative conditioning as paradigms. He explains how these paradigms are so strong that they control everything you do, every action you take. So even though you may be focusing on your goals and working to create what you want, the paradigms will keep you stuck exactly where you are. This is what happens when you seem to be making progress only to find that you get pulled back to where you were.
As an example, let’s say that you currently earn $50,000 per year. You set a goal that you want to make $100,000 per year. You focus on your goal, you believe that you can achieve it, you believe that you deserve it, and yet, no matter what you do, you still do not achieve your goal. You do not seem to be able to move from $50,000 to $100,000. So you start to think that there must be something wrong with you.
What is actually happening is that your unconscious mind knows and feels comfortable with your ability to make $50,000. Your conditioning (or paradigm) says that this is what you are capable of, this is where you fit in. You comfortably resonate with this level of income. When you try to move beyond that, your conditioning (your sub-conscious mind) will create situations and circumstances that bring you back each time to the $50,000 level, because that’s where your conditioning says you belong.
So how do you change this conditioning? There are 4 steps that you can take to help you:
- Affirmations – for affirmations to work most effectively they need to be written down and repeated several times each day. They need to be written as if they’re already happening (for example: ‘it feels so good to be making $100,000 per year’) and to make them even more powerful, spend time each day visualizing the outcome of the affirmation.
- Awareness of negative people – it is important to surround yourself with people who will encourage and support you, not those who will destroy your confidence or tell you that you should not have such goals or that you will not be able to achieve them. If you have negative people around you (including family and friends) then limit how much time you spend with them.
- Get the support you need – find people who are already where you want to be and spend time with them. Ask for positive feedback. Ask for help and ask for ideas. Allow others to help you.
- Set small goals – start with the end in mind and work backwards. What do you need to do to accomplish what you want? Break it down into small goals, simple action steps that you can take and do something every day that will get you there.
This isn’t just positive or hopeful thinking. This is taking real action to re-wire the brain. Much has been studied and written about the power of our sub-conscious mind, negative conditioning, paradigms – whatever you want to call it. The mind is incredibly powerful but with awareness and action you can overcome your own negative conditioning and achieve what you want. This doesn’t just apply to business, but to all aspects of life.
One of the great things about Feng Shui is that it works on an energetic level to support you in overcoming negative conditioning. All changes that you make in your environment to improve the energy have a direct effect on your own energy, bringing more positive people and experiences into your life and helping you achieve your goals.
