How organized are your finances? I ask because we’ve just been through that time of year again when tax returns have to be filed and it can be a stressful time for many people. I think the amount of stress you experience relates directly to how organized you are with your financial documentation. For example, my bookkeeper recently shared with me that at tax time clients often provide her with a box full of receipts, check stubs, statements, etc. for the entire year that she then has to sort through to prepare their tax returns.

If that sounds familiar, I would also hazard a guess that you are not where you want to be financially. You’re not making the amount of money that you want to make. You may even be broke. How do I know? Because money cannot come to chaos. People often ask me to work with them and their homes to bring them more money, but here’s the thing – if you cannot manage what you have, why would the Universe provide more?

If you want more money (and who doesn’t) I would recommend that the very first thing you do is organize what you have now – and that includes the paperwork. If you simply round up all receipts and documentation once each year because you have to then it’s likely that you don’t know what your financial picture looks like day-to-day. The only time you really know is after the tax return has been completed. Do you owe money for taxes or are you due for a refund?

You might wonder what this has to do with Feng Shui, but it actually has everything to do with Feng Shui. One of the first principles of Feng Shui is to bring order out of chaos. Where there is chaos, there is stagnant energy. Where there is stagnant energy, there will be stagnation in that part of your life. Why would you want that in any part of your life, let alone around money?

I’m not just talking about personal finances here, this happens with business owners too. If you find it hard to keep your financial records under control, hire a bookkeeper. The time you free up and the energy you free up around your finances will make it more than worthwhile. If you don’t have the time to do it or it is not your area of expertise, you must have someone do it for you.

We need money for many things in our lives. It is an essential part of life. Money, like everything else, is energy and it needs to flow. You may want more but in order to have more you must first honor and appreciate what you already have – even if it’s not enough, it’s something. Part of honoring and appreciating what you have is to keep it organized and to be aware of what’s coming in and what’s going out. It’s very difficult to be wealthy when you have chaos around your finances.

So now that the taxes are done (hopefully they are done), why not take this opportunity to organize your financial documents on a regular basis? Why not keep everything filed away in a system where you can find things and you know exactly where everything is? Why not have everything entered into a program on your computer so that next year when tax time rolls around again, you can simply hand the file to your CPA to prepare your tax return? You’ll save money in the long run because you won’t have to waste time (yours or your CPA’s) in going through a box of documents trying to make sense of everything.
The more you can create order around your finances, the more you keep the energy flowing. When the energy flows, money can flow to you If you want to be wealthy, this is the first step to take. By doing this, you’re not only honoring and appreciating your money – you are honoring and appreciating yourself.
