I was teaching a 5-week Feng Shui adult education course when a woman came up to me at the end of the first week's class. My classes are quite interactive and during this first class she sat at the back of the room and didn't say a word.

She looked very pale and drawn, and a little nervous. She knew that one of the sessions I was going to teach had to do with clutter and she asked me when I would be teaching that particular class? I told her it would come in week 3, so it would be in another 2 weeks.

June started to cry as she spoke with me. She told me that she was overwhelmed with clutter. There wasn't a clear surface in her house. And, every time she tried to do something about it, things just seemed to get worse. I assured her that I would be providing a lot of information in the class on clutter that I thought would help her. She thanked me and said she was very much looking forward to it.

The following week I was a little concerned to see that June didn't come to the class. I thought perhaps it had all become just too overwhelming or she had decided she didn't want to deal with it after all. But the following week she did come. She explained that she had simply forgotten to come the previous week and she was very annoyed with herself for missing it. Still, she was at the session in which she was most interested.

People often feel guilty when they are overwhelmed with clutter, thinking it must mean that they are bad people for letting things get in such a state.
Feng Shui

During the class I explained what clutter is, how it affects us, why it accumulates in the first place, and how we can deal with it.

You don't have to de-clutter all at once
I also emphasized the importance of starting slowly – you don't have to do it all in one go. Start with a drawer or a cabinet. Start with one small area of a room or a closet. It's also okay to ask for help, whether that's from a friend or family member or whether it's hiring a professional organizer.

I find that once people understand how clutter happened in first place, and how it affects them from an energy perspective, it becomes much easier for them to do something about it. Releasing the guilt that they have associated with it is also very important.

June attended the next two sessions and at the final class everyone was amazed when June entered the room. Previously she had always dressed in very dark colors, with no make-up and a very plain hair style.

This time, she looked like a different woman. She'd had her hair done, she wore make-up and clothing in colors that really suited her. She was transformed. She had brought a poster-board with her that she wanted to show to everyone in the class. She was no longer the shy woman who was too intimidated to speak.

She proudly showed us her poster board. On it she had pasted photographs of her kitchen and her bedroom – before and after photos. These were the only two rooms that she'd been able to do, but she had done a remarkable job. Before, they were just as she had described – clutter everywhere, on every surface, on the floor, everywhere you looked. Afterwards they were clean, tidy, organized, nothing out of place. She told us how she was now going on to address each of the other rooms in the house in turn.

Clutter is stagnant energy
When you have clutter in your home you have stagnant energy. It pulls your energy down, it literally drains you of energy and creates a feeling of overwhelm. When you release it by letting go of things you no longer need, and organize the things that you have left, you get your energy back.
June's transformation was dramatic in a short period of time. There is no doubt that when you eliminate the clutter from your life, you'll become more in control of your life. You'll feel better and life will become less complicated.

Clutter, clutter everywhere...
Clutter almost feels like a virus. Once it grabs hold of an area, it quickly moves to other areas of the home. Most people keep certain areas pristine, and "hide" the rest of the stuff in those unseen places like closets, attics and basements.

That's why I put together a special audio program and guide book that's all about clutter… that is, getting rid of the clutter!

Dealing with Clutter Using Feng Shui is a 2-part audio program in which you'll get step-by-step instructions on...
Why the simple act of organizing things may not be enough...

How to find "clutter" in your home in places you least expect...

And how you can "de-clutte" your mind while you de-clutter your home, infusing you with huge piles of "positive" and healing energy.
